Dispirited Restoration was made at the beginning of 2016. I was struggling to keep positive. It was all about feeling destroyed and I needed to focus on rebuilding. I came home from a particularly bad day at work. I went to my studio and just started cutting canvas. The first stroke with the razor blade and I drew blood on my thumb. That was a sign to continue...just cutting and tearing. Then I stitched it back together and dipped the whole canvas into Potassium Permanganate to antique the fabric. Once dry I added a layer of plaster, oil paint, ink, encaustic wax etc...until done.

I made another loom knitted vessel. Below is the before and after felting. This time I tried doing a linen stitch so that I didn't have the distinct knitting lines. I added some stitches on the top by hand stitch because I knew it would be incorporated once the piece was felted. The wool was purchased from my local farmers market.

I was really happy with the fuzzy effect once it was felted. I have since learned from a wet felter that the desire is to not have fuzz....but this is exactly what I wanted. In we felting you don't want the fuzz and you want a very compressed wool so that it can stand alone and actually be cut without fraying the edges.

I presented the Group of Eight challenge for the quarterly due date of November 2015. This challenge was to be art that could be viewed 24/7. It had to have built in lighting into the piece or be glow in dark...whatever it takes so that the art could be viewed day and night without exterior lighting. I had been dreaming of this challenge for years waiting for my turn and I was really excited about it. Not sure the group felt the same way but the results of this challenge were phenomenal.

I created this piece knowing that I wanted my 24/7 to incorporate fiber optics. This is the first piece I made with this technique and I will hopefully do more in the future. I started out with a machine embroidered tree that I made many many years ago in a workshop hosted by Sheree Schlote. I then created the cloth from a distressed canvas base, layering and painting as I went. The fiber optics were hand stitched into place. It was then mounted on a wood art board and my husband cut the holes and he wired the fiber optics up to a battery. This piece lights up when switched on. The tree trunk bleeds yellow light and the tree tips and leaves light up red and yellow. I have not successfully been able to take a night shot of it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445494619357164603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6303995880918099278.post-10966513907315979612016-07-19T10:42:00.000-07:002016-07-19T10:42:04.116-07:00Baby Blankie

I made this little quilt from a workshop the Group of Eight hosted. Thanks to Linda Kittmer I was able to do a small quilt for my Grand-baby to come. My quilting days are over. I really have no desire to make them any more. I know that my years of quilting have left me knowing that I love making the quilt tops...hate the quilting part. Therefore, I have a surplus of quilts that need to be quilted....no need to have another.

Jesika and I selected the flannel fabric together. It turns out that this little quilt is very heavy because of the layering and cutting method used. I think it would be better to be used as a quilt play mat rather than an actual quilt. I believe this quilt was completed in November 2015.

The Group of Eight hosted Alice Vander Vennen for a workshop in March of this year. Her methods are inspiring and how she processes and moves through her creation was fascinating for me. I find that my methods of selecting materials to use is very similar to Alice's. What I'm using in my work needs to speak to me on a spiritual level for the piece to come together. This is why it takes me quite some time from start to finish in most cases when creating. Everyone in the workshop produced multiple pieces and I currently have another piece on my table waiting for completion someday.

This piece was created using my own oil painting at the bottom, a painted and stressed dryer sheet, hand made paper, misc fabric scraps, a shell from Ireland and a wild grape vine collected from my garden. Alice encouraged me to use a piece of her copper which she had gently heated for the multiple colour combination effect. This was all hand stitched and framed within the class.

"Feather" was created due to a conversation I had with Alice. She has never been successful using a feather in any of her work. Alice felt that using a feather would in some way limit the piece to being only about a feather...that is of course if I have her understanding right. With that in mind I just had to make something with a feather. I collect feathers when they are offered, presented to me by nature. I absolutely love them. There is something so delicate yet strong about them.

This framed piece was made with scraps of fabric, art cloth that I made with burned the edges, wild grape vine from my garden and a "Feather" that had been offered to me by nature.

Special thanks to Alice for a wonderful day, her inspiration and her gifts of sharing will be long remembered.

This work was completed in May 2015 and never posted. I've been away from the blogging scene for many reasons.

This work was inspired by a friend that made a Bojagi piece after viewing an art installation at a local Fibre art show. It's a Korean technique that I researched after seeing what my friend had made.

I was not currently working on anything that was embroidered and haven't for a very long time. It's very time consuming and therefore almost never comes into my mind for anything related to my artwork.

I did, however, have many squares made many years ago...probably prior to 15 years, somewhere in my unfinished projects. I knew I would never use them for anything else and I certainly wasn't going to complete the medallion that they were supposed to surround....

I decided that I would make a bojagi center and surround them with the embroidered squares. I thought this would make a wonderful duvet cover for my bed. Once I started I knew I just wanted to get the damn thing done so I ended up making a table cloth. In some ways a waste of all the hours of embroidery along with the hours spent making the bojagi center. But I did complete it and I do like it very much. I think it's a contemporary feel to an old art.
It was fall 2015 and leaves were on the ground. I wanted to experiment with encasing the leaves with encaustic.
This is a detail picture showing that I used an old rusted pop can found just hiding under the leaves. My friends didn't understand why I was collecting garbage along the way. I loved the way the pop can was disintegrating and at first glance was hardly recognizable.

This was my second felted vessel that was completed sometime in 2015. I wanted something larger than my first. I still wanted it to be natural wool for the bones and pine bark I envisioned using.

The bones were all the same size. What I discovered was that our dog Rufus liked the bones as well and actually ate the ends off a couple. Oh well...what is one to do.

The pine bark bottom was a from the farm. I wanted to use it as natural as possible and I wanted the hole for a more distressed look.

I've always been in love with fibre and working with needle felting. When I was young I tried my hand at knitting and it was such a horrible fail. I could never get my tension right. I was too tight or too loose or worse...a combination of both on the same project. The two handed thing was just not for me. I tried my hand at crochet before my art days but it just never became something I wanted to keep going with. Needle felting, wet felting...now that's the ticket. I wanted to be able to knit something for the purposes of felting it but I didn't know how to get this look. My issue was that I wanted to make a vessel. I had a dream one night that inspired me to cork...if a child can do it then I should be able to do it. Well corking was what we called it when I was a girl but now it's called loom knitting. I purchased a knitting loom...googled how to get started and I was off to make my first vessel as I had dreamed it.

Not exactly what I had envisioned but I was happy with the results for a start. It was narrower than I wanted but that was ok because it currently holds my some of my collected feathers.

The bottom was made with pine needles from our farm. This was very hard on my hands and I'm not sure I will do this again but I really like the effect. It was quite interesting gathering my pine needles, washing them and preparing them for use along with the information gathered on making pine needle baskets.

It's my opinion on freedom of speech. Where has it gone & why can't we say what we feel without the possibility of reprisal. Words can cut so we need to be mindful but that doesn't mean we shouldn't speak our mind & be given common respect that it's our opinion & not everyone need to agree with it.

The essence of Street Art is the freedom of expression...of course this is just my opinion.

This was the first time we had ever been to Ireland as well as it being the first time we've ever taken holidays with friends. What a fantastic trip we had. Ireland is the place to go for "R & R"...rocks and rain. I've never seen so many rocks in all my life. Newfoundland doesn't even come close. I've also never seen so much rain. It rained every day. It didn't bother us at all, we just kept going & it just added to the wonderful ambience of the landscape.

Along our travels I would do my normal collecting of anything I thought was interesting. This is better than any shop if you ask me. Beautiful, free and just sitting there offering up it's glory. The feather was actually collected on the first day we arrived. Guinness...what a fantastic facility inside Dublin. The feather was along side the road sitting in water with dirt & gravel stuck to it. Well...I just love that sort of thing.

The dried thistle was collected on the Aran Islands. Miles & miles of rock made into pens for grazing livestock & farmland. It was so windy that sometimes I just had to sit down to wait for the gust to pass so I could gain my footing. The dried thistle was so perfect in this landscape and I had Chris cut of one of the heads & I carried it in my hand until we got back to the bed and breakfast that evening. It was so delicate I was afraid that it would crush if I put it in my bag.
Chris saw the rust piece & instantly I just had to have it.

Rocks & Rain is rough and a perfect fitting for my Irish piece. Everything except the rust has been encased in encaustic wax. It was the first time I had been in the studio in about seven weeks. I was completely in a zone & afraid to leave even to eat for fear that the moment would end.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445494619357164603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6303995880918099278.post-52722639966738422232014-11-25T16:36:00.000-08:002014-11-25T16:36:21.724-08:00Number 9 BehindSummer is definitely over. The bees are put to bed and the building is almost complete, so it's time to get back to the studio.

I've been working on a project that just hasn't worked out and with a new deadline looming I needed to come up with a project that was satisfying. Once again I was trying to make my mind work on something that just wasn't the right time. I guess some artists can do that but I'm driven by where my mind takes me & this time it just kept coming back to felting.

The subject for the Group of Eight challenge was "behind". I can't tell you how hard I found this subject. Nothing was coming to me except Michael Angelo's 'David' and how beautiful his ass is. I was going to construct that ass but decided it might be too daring for a group challenge.

I had some alpaca that I got from a friend and it's been calling to me to do something with it. I also had watch parts that came from another friend. Soooo I felted the alpaca background, added the watch parts and a random strand that my daughter made while trying to spin the alpaca. It was her first time spinning and I fell in love with how random it ended up. We joke that when she gets better with the spinning that I won't end up with this kind of artful tidbits to add to my projects.

"Number 9 Behind" is significant because I've always considered myself number 9 in the Group of Eight and Behind, because of the subject as well as how far Behind, I actually was in completing this project.

I had a couple of mini journals on my desk, nagging me to get them covered for the group donation. I haven't had my sewing machine out in quite some time & I think it's mad at me. I had a major computer issue with my machine & I had it in for service for months last summer. Since it's been home I haven't sewn in a long time & now the bobbin winder is broken. Just not my luck when I was just getting my creative fabric juices going.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445494619357164603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6303995880918099278.post-47367116191262094882014-07-14T02:00:00.000-07:002014-07-14T04:31:13.449-07:00AcceptanceMy Istanbul piece has been accepted into this years Fibrations show in Burlington, Ontario. I actually thought it was bad luck when my submission came back as #001. That meant that I was the very first person to enter a piece. For once in my life I wasn't waiting until the last minute & it worked out for me.

I finally finished this piece on my bench & had enough time to clean up the studio. It's time to get into some fabric....

I haven't named it & not sure a name will be coming. I fell in love with this piece of bark with its wonderful moss & orange speckling. I actually think I collected it over the winter snow shoeing on Many-Hues badlands.
The cicada was given to me by a co-worker who actually doesn't like bugs at all. The wax worked wonderful & didn't damage the delicate wings when dipped. A very impressive bug indeed.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445494619357164603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6303995880918099278.post-50662859638633545842014-06-18T04:31:00.001-07:002014-06-18T04:31:59.960-07:00Fibre Content 2014

I've been a very bad blogger & have not been making any posts lately. Spring has brought my love of gardening to the forefront & along with that I've been working in the bee yard in my spare time. Building a bee hut for equipment is a necessity this year. I just haven't had the time & energy required for the studio. I'm still working on a nature piece but it's coming very slow as my mind is just not focused enough. Artful gardening is definitely my priority.

Fibre Content 2014 is a show that GOE participates in. I haven't had any word yet to know if my art has been accepted. You just never know how these things will turn out. Wish me luck...

Spring is here and there is much to do. Gardening has been on my mind which leaves me even less time in the studio. I haven't posted for a couple of weeks taking advantage of the nice weather for yard cleanup.
After work I've been working slowly on another background for more of nature's offerings.

This time I was inspired by a book I was re-reading called "Bags with Paper and Stitch". I started with canvas and I glued newsprint to it. Then I distressed the fabric and tore the newsprint away in sections that weren't glued. Then I applied plaster and paint.

There is still much to do but working slowly lets it progress over time and allows my mind to play with different ideas.
I'll have lots of time to ponder & collect more of nature's offerings in Ireland over the next couple of weeks. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445494619357164603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6303995880918099278.post-53622777357292491372014-04-07T04:08:00.000-07:002014-04-07T04:08:00.853-07:00Nature's Offering 2
Nature's Offering 2 is now complete...

With solid background it's not as delicate as my first piece. I'm really loving the effect of the plaster over canvas and the encaustic medium lets all the natural beauty show through.

I've attached dried poppy heads, bark, birch bark, antler buttons, porcupine quills & a pressed kale leaf from my veggie patch last year. As stated previously, the metal strip is the cutting edge from a cellophane box that's been taken out of the ashes of the wood stove.

I don't think I'm done with the bark collected from the property and I really love how the encaustic medium strengthens it without changing it's texture. This may just be my very first series of work.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445494619357164603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6303995880918099278.post-32503881135646561392014-03-24T07:41:00.000-07:002014-03-24T07:41:00.014-07:00Studio PeakThis is a piece that started to develop when my husband, Chris, gave me some metal out of his studio's wood stove.

It's the cutting strip from a celophane box. I had some bark that had already been prepared with paint & encaustic and going through the offering bowl had my creative juices going. So I have a general layout & now this piece is in the beginning stages of preparing the background.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445494619357164603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6303995880918099278.post-48845090461936554332014-03-09T16:22:00.000-07:002014-03-09T16:22:12.729-07:00Natures Offering
Natures Offering was inspired by an artist that I've been following, Bridgette Guerzon Mills. I'm drawn to encaustic painting because of its natural elements. It's the reason why I wanted to become a bee keeper...little did I know that the wax is the smallest portion of a bee harvest.

It took quite a while to complete because as usual my pieces develop over time. I almost never start out with a vision of a completed piece.

I started with canvas that I distressed using a razor blade & needle nose pliers. At first I was very delicate but as my confidence built I had a heaver hand with the razor. Then I added plasterwrap that is used in sculpting. The pieces were a little flimsy so I backed the canvas with more plaster. I added some oil painted accents along with some encaustic gesso & then I covered everything with encaustic wax.

I love anything rustic and raw looking. A couple of weeks ago my daughter came home for the weekend and we spent some time in the woods. She was able to 'shuck' the bark off of a dead tree and it worked perfectly for my hanger. The bark is very strange and spongy and I've been eying it for quite some time. I was so excited to have it and that weekend happened to be quite windy. I had quite a hard time getting my bark to the car without it blowing away in bits.

Special thanks to Jesika for shucking the bark and to Keith Stewart for saving me the hornets nest. I know he thinks I'm crazy but he's a fantastic enabler.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445494619357164603noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6303995880918099278.post-59036941524166270842014-02-17T05:06:00.000-08:002014-02-17T05:06:30.988-08:00Encaustic over PlasterPlaster all started because of a new book I purchased called "Plaster Studio" by Stephanie Lee and Judy Wise. My husband sent me the link thinking that I would enjoy it and he was right. If you're interested, take a look at this YouTube video.

I still have not discovered a way to get good photos of my encaustic work. There is always a shine spot & no matter how hard I try I can't seem to figure it out. I guess I need some photography lessons.

I was hooked as soon as I saw that they were showing techniques in the book using encaustic medium. This is my first piece exploring with plaster. I really love the texture but its damn messy stuff. I haven't been able to bring out fabric in my studio while any plaster is in the works. Oh...if only I had a studio conducive to my eclectic ways....with work stations to fix my artistic appetite.
It was unfortunate that we were restricted to hang by chain only. We weren't allowed to hang by Command strips or hangers...so the show didn't look as fabulous as the pieces that we had to show. Some walls looked a little sparse. These are pictures that Chris took for me. Not all the displays are shown and just a quick reminder that this is collective work.
She made a wonderful cat bed and I fell in love with the finished felted bowl she made. So I just asked her to sell me enough so that I could make my own bowl.
I tried to crochet but I wasn't remembering it quite as easily as I thought I would...nothing like riding a bike. I couldn't seem to pick it up so I asked Jesika to knit me the bowl.
I wanted it to be an offering bowl. When I'm over at the property I find little treasures that nature has to offer & I've been collecting them and stashing them all over the studio. Anything from feathers to bugs to bones. So when I was cleaning the studio the other day...I collected some of the items for my Offering Bowl.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445494619357164603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6303995880918099278.post-52592895573943565762014-01-01T12:39:00.001-08:002014-01-11T04:31:43.772-08:00Bright & BeautifulI was working on projects even though I didn't post for a while.
